Whenever you have an appliance that is connected to a water supply, you run an additional risk of having water leaks in your home. While minor leaks are difficult to prevent entirely, you should do your best to prevent anything that could lead to catastrophic failure. This means being aware of where the water hookups are and what possible risks they could entail. If you are leaving your home for an extended period, it is a good idea to turn off the water supplies to connected appliances.

When moving an appliance that is connected to water, you should first turn off the water supply, since a hose could get snagged or pulled loose if it gets caught on something.

If you can access the water connections, you should regularly examine them for wear and replace them when necessary. In some cases, such as with your washer hose, it might be a good idea to preemptively replace the hose with a higher quality version. Often the hoses supplied with your washer aren’t the best quality.
